NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — National City has authorized several major road, walking, cycling and wastewater projects that could affect transportation and neighborhood infrastructure across the city.
According to local investigative reporting on the city council’s July actions, more than $10 million in project funding was approved for road, sewer and pedestrian improvements. Projects include speed-reducing mini-circles on N Avenue near East 20th and East 22nd streets, major work on sewer pipes along East 24th Street, and new bicycle and pedestrian links near Eighth Street and Harbor Drive.
Several different projects, not one contract
A roughly $4 million sewer contract involves East 24th Street between National City Boulevard and N Avenue, including sewer lines, manholes and related connections. A separate road-safety action involves small traffic circles intended to slow vehicles at two intersections.
The city also advanced designs and funding for the Eighth Street corridor, including a bicycle and pedestrian railroad crossing, shared-use paths, signs, striping, lighting and drainage improvements. Some segments would require coordination with railroad, transit and state agencies.
What is the construction status?
Approval of funding and engineering does not prove that every project has broken ground or that the described path is open. The July account listed different anticipated schedules, and some engineering phases had not yet begun.
How residents can participate
Property owners and commuters can consult National City’s public works and council records for construction notices. Check the current responsible agency before treating an older schedule as a live closure announcement.
