NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — Sports facilities at El Toyon Park are undergoing extensive improvements as National City advances its park renovation project.

The official El Toyon Park Improvements project portal lists a wide package of work: replacement of the multipurpose athletic field, sports lights, basketball courts and playground equipment; upgrades to tennis facilities; new pickleball courts; and pedestrian, accessibility, landscaping and drainage improvements.

What was finished by October?

In the project’s October 1, 2026 update, the contractor reported finishing field installation and putting windscreen material at the pickleball courts. The next planned tasks were pavement and striping at the western parking lot.

The update said the park’s western side and adjacent parking area would be affected by construction. Since it was published at the start of October, it cannot prove those same closures remain in place on October 31 or that all remaining components were finished on schedule.

What else is planned?

The project also describes possible changes involving new park lighting, bicycle connections, paths, ADA improvements, safety cameras, picnic furniture and shade structures. These are listed project elements and must be distinguished from work specifically documented as complete.

How to follow progress

National City’s official project page identifies the city as the administrator and includes the project manager contact information. Residents can review later construction notices before visiting sports fields, courts or the west parking lot.
